SEABEES ALASKAN JACKET

SEABEES ALASKAN JACKET

The Seabees (from Construction Battalions) were recruited by the United States Navy during World War II. They were skilled construction workers whose task was to assist in building naval bases in the theatres of war.

This particular design of jacket was worn around the time of 1940 by Seabees who were stationed in Alaska.

The outer shell is made from a high-denisity combed yarn cotton that has both strength and suppleness. The removable large hood is lined with Alpaca and was designed to be worn over a helmet if necessary. The body is also lined with Alpaca mohair pile and the sleeves are lined with wool blanket. (Not having pile in the sleeves means the jacket is more comfortable to wear giving maximum available movement). There is also a windproof interlining which blocks any cold biting winds.

This is a real business jacket and surprisingly lighweight combining comfort and warmth - a design well ahead of its time.
